Laboratory

Amyloid bodies [#/area] in Prostatic fluid by Light microscopy

Definition

Amyloid bodies, or corpora amylacea, are opaque, rounded bodies found in the acini of the prostate and occasionally in urine. Abnormal deposits of amyloid bodies, or amyloidosis, can be harmful. Older men often develop amyloid in the ducts of their prostates (corpora amylacea), that could underlie some cases of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It has been suggested in the literature that there may be a link between bacterial infection, inflammation and amyloid deposition of pro-inflammatory proteins in the prostate, and (with some speculation) that these may contribute to the development of malignancy (Yanamandra K, et al. (2009) Amyloid Formation by the Pro-Inflammatory S100A8/A9 Proteins in the Ageing Prostate. PLoS ONE 4(5): e5562. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0005562).
