Definition
The Pain/Agitation Scale measures the behaviors and physiologic signs associated with pain, which is difficult to differentiate from other sources of agitation in neonates. Pain is scored from zero to positive two for each behavioral and physiologic criteria, then summed as a positive score. Total score ranges from zero to ten in neonates greater than/equal to 30 weeks gestation. One point is added to the total when the neonate is less than thirty weeks gestational age, with a total score range from one to eleven in the premature infant.
