Neonatal pain, agitation, and sedation scale panel NPASS

Definition

The Neonatal Pain, Agitation, and Sedation Scale (N-PASS) is used to measure behaviors and physiologic signs that indicate pain and/or agitation, and sedation in newborns. The N-PASS is comprised of two separate scales: Pain and/or Agitation, and Sedation. Pain and agitation are difficult to differentiate in the neonate as the behaviors and physiologic signs are similar. Pain should be assessed regularly, appropriate to the situation. The Sedation Scale may not be required with every Pain/Agitation assessment; regular sedation assessment is indicated with the administration of potentially sedating medications. The assessment scores are used together to inform pain and sedation management therapy.
