Laboratory

Acanthocytes [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy

Definition

Acanthocytes are a type of dysmorphic red blood cell (RBC) with vesicle-shaped protrusions. The presence of acanthocytes in urine sediment is indicative of glomerular pathology. Although hematuria is common in diabetic nephropathy, acanthocytosis is not; therefore, patients with diabetic nephropathy who are found to have acanthocytes in their urine sediment should have further work-up to determine the etiology of glomerular disease.
