Definition

This panel contains results for antibodies to Epstein Barr virus (EBV) antigens in serum for the evaluation of infectious mononucleosis. EBV-associated antigens include viral capsid antigen (VCA), early antigen (EA), EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA). Anti-VCA IgM antibodies appears early in EBV infection and often disappears within 4 to 6 weeks. Anti-VCA IgG and anti-EA IgG appear in the acute phase of EBV infection.
