Laboratory

Bordetella pertussis+bronchiseptica+holmesii IS481 DNA [Presence] in Nasopharynx by NAA with non-probe detection

Definition

This test is primarily for the detection of the IS481 insertional element DNA of the Bordetella pertussis genome in human nasopharyngeal swab samples taken from patients suspected of having respiratory tract infection caused by B. pertussis. The IS481 insertion sequence can also be found in B. holmesii and B. bronchiseptica strains, so respiratory infections with either Bordetella pertussis, B. holmesii or B. bronchiseptica may yield positive test results in this assay, which does not differentiate between these strains. Since B. pertussis and B. holmesii present with similar clinical symptoms, additional testing would need to be performed to differentiate between these strains. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the illumigene Pertussis DNA Amplification Assay, which uses loop-mediated isothermal DNA amplification (LAMP) technology to detect the IS481 insertional element.
