Laboratory

Pepsin A+Pepsinogen A [Mass/volume] in Lower respiratory specimen by Immunoassay

Definition

The presence of gastric pepsin A in a patient's airway is a marker for aspiration and assists in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux. Chronic aspiration of gastric contents may worsen lung disease in premature infants, or other mechanically ventilated patients. [PMID: 16954956] This assay detects both pepsin A and pepsinogen A and does not differentiate between the two. A level of less than 3 is considered in range. (One unit of pepsin A=0.1ng/ml pepsin A is a measure of concentration (ng/ml) expressed in an arbitrarily defined unit.)
