Laboratory

Staphylococcus aureus.vancomycin resistance [Susceptibility] Qualitative

Definition

This is a screening assay to determine the sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from clinical specimens to vancomycin 6.0 ug/mL. If vancomycin inhibits the growth of the isolate, then that isolate is susceptible to vancomycin. On the other hand, if an isolate grows despite the presence of vancomycin, it is characterized as vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA). This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health.
