Laboratory

XXX allergen triggered histamine release [Units/volume] in Blood

Definition

Quantitative determination of histamine release in heparinized whole blood incubated with a suspected allergen. This term is based on, but not limited in use to, IBL International's Histamine-Release assay, which incubates whole blood samples with different concentrations of the suspected allergen. Release of histamine occurs upon stimulation of basophilic granulocytes with amounts depending on their sensibility to the allergen. In the Histamine-Release assay, the percent of histamine release falls within the 100% control (= Total Histamine) and the blank value (= Spontaneous Release). Any positive signal greater than 5% release is regarded as allergen specific positive.
