Laboratory

Colony count [#/volume] in Implanted device by Culture

Definition

Performed when there is a clinical assessment of prosthetic infection or clinical suspicion of aseptic prosthetic joint loosening. Explanted prosthesis components for suspected infection are placed into a tank containing sterile Ringer's solution and sonicated (ultrasound to dislodge the biofilm microorganisms into the surrounding fluid). The sonication fluid is cultured on aerobic and anaerobic agar plates and inoculated in broth media. Cultures are examined for 8 days and colonies counted.
