Laboratory

Cervical cells.overexpressing HPV E6+E7 mRNA/cervical cells by Flow cytometry (FC)

Definition

Detects E6/E7 mRNA in sufficient quantity to demonstrate integration and expression in ectocervical cells in cervical specimens in which high-risk HPV types have been previously been detected. (This test should only be performed on specimens found to be positive by other high-risk HPV detection methods.) Detection may identify infection more likely to progress to disease as the detection of E6/E7 is not only a sign of virus within the cell, but also evidence of viral activity and thus may help discriminate the presence of CIN2+ disease. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the LabCorp QuantaSURE mRNA based test which measures the quantity of E6/E7 mRNA per cell and then calculates the percentage of cells that are overexpressing E6/E7 mRNA.
