LaboratoryHepatitis B virus e Ab [Presence] in Serum, Plasma or Blood by Rapid immunoassay
Definition
Rapid test for hepatitis B envelope antibody (HBeAb) used as a screen for Hepatitis B, or to monitor the early course of disease, as the appearance of HBeAb marks the transition from high levels of virus replication and infectivity to low levels of replication and infectivity. Available in test strip and cassette formats from manufacturers in various countries including the US and China, the test can be used to evaluate the presence of HBeAb in blood and blood products intended for transfusions, and to detect ongoing or previous hepatitis B viral infection. (As of 8/25/2014, no HBeAb rapid test kits are approved for use in the United States.) This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the MEDINOSTICS International HBeAb Rapid Screen Test kit which is a colloidal gold enhanced immunoassay for the detection of anti-HBe in human serum, plasma or whole blood. It provides a visual, qualitative result and can be done in approximately 15 minutes.
