Laboratory

Hepatitis B virus core Ab [Presence] in Serum, Plasma or Blood by Rapid immunoassay

Definition

Hepatitis B core Ab (HBcAb) rapid tests are available in test strip and cassette formats from manufacturers in various countries including the US, Singapore, and China. Hepatitis B core Ab (HBcAb) rapid tests are useful screening tests for acute hepatitis B because HBcAb is the first antibody to appear in acute hepatitis B infections. During the window period of acute hepatitis B, (after HBsAg disappears and before HBsAb appears), HBcAb is sometimes the only serologic marker detected. High levels of HBcAb persist long term, making these rapid tests useful for detecting past history of hepatitis B infection. This term was based on, but not limited in use to, the iCare One Step HBcAb test kit which is a is a competitive colloidal gold enhanced immunoassay for the detection of anti-HBc antigen(HBcAb) in human serum or plasma. Testing can be done in approximately 15 minutes.
