68954-7
LaboratoryStreptococcus pyogenes rRNA [Presence] in Throat by Probe
Definition
This test is for rapid identification (within 1 hour of sample preparation) of Streptococcus pyogenes from throat swabs for diagnosis of Group A Streptococcal pharyngitis. Identification is based on a DNA probe assay which uses nucleic acid hybridization for the qualitative detection of specific ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences that are unique to Streptococcus pyogenes. This test eliminates the time and difficulty of cultures and can be used as a back-up for POC streptococcal antigen tests. Negative results do not rule out the possibility of an infection since low levels of Group A Streptococcus may not be detected.
