LaboratorySkin Ab [Titer] in Serum
Definition
The detection of skin antibodies assists in the diagnosis of chronic vesicular-bullous diseases such as pemphigus and pemphigoid. When patient sera are incubated on monkey or guinea pig esophagus sections, anti-skin antibodies present in the serum will bind with disease-specific patterns by immunofluorescence. For example, the intercellular (IC) antibody pattern diagnoses pemphigus with a 90% sensitivity. Testing with the 2 different species of esophagus sections (monkey and guinea pig) assists in distinguishing different forms of pemphigus. Antibodies following a basement membrane pattern are present in bullous pemphigoid (70%), vesicular pemphigoid (50%) and cicatricial pemphigoid (10%).
