Definition
This study is used to image the inferior vena cava (IVC) and its tributaries. The IVC is formed from the two common iliac veins at the L5 vertebral level. Other tributaries draining into the IVC include the lumbar veins, right gonadal vein, renal veins, right suprarenal vein, hepatic veins and inferior phrenic veins. The left gonadal and suprarenal veins drain into the left renal vein and are not directly connected to the IVC.
